to choose which area of medicine you wish to specialize in. The area of a
doctor抯 specialization will also help patients to choose who among these doctors
can skillfully and knowingly help treat their illnesses.
Doctors or
physicians are categorized based on various factors. It could be based on
patient population or medical specialty.
Some of the physician
specializations are:
* Family Medicine Primary Care physicians can administer
to all ages of patients and give immediate basic care for common
illnesses.
Internal Medicine Primary Care physicians or internists can
provide primary medical care to patients and specialize further on other areas
like endocrinology and gastroenterology. Compared to family practitioners,
internists do not minister to children under 18 years old and have more training
in hospitals.
* Cardiologists are Internal Medicine doctors whose
training and knowledge is focused on heart and cardiovascular system抯 blood
vessels. This field has a lot more sub specialties as per different areas of the
field.
* Endocrinologists are skilled at treating the endocrine system.
They are knowledgeable on conditions of glands which secrete hormones which
regulate and control bodily functions. Diabetics are treated by
Endocrinologists.
* Gastroenterologists are Internists who teat
digestive system conditions.
Infectious Disease doctors may practice primary
care internal medicine as they treat patients with infectious ailments like
swine and bird flu, HIV/AIDS and other contagious diseases.

Dermatologists are physicians who are specialized on treating skin problems.
They usually are not on on-call schedules but can work only on specified clinic
hours. They also receive high compensations.
* Surgeons may have general
surgery training or choose further trainings in cardiac surgery, neurosurgery or
orthopedic surgery. The training of surgeons are usually longer than other
medical sub-specialties and primary care physicians.
* Ophthalmologists
are physicians trained to treat eye disorders and can also perform eye surgery.
If the vision correction cannot be dealt with by an optometrist then an
ophthalmologist can.
* Obstetricians/Gynecologists or OB/Gyns are
physicians who can help treat and deal with women抯 health. Pregnancy,
reproductive organs surgery and abnormality repair are some of the medical
conditions handled by Ob/Gyns.
* Otolaryngologists are physicians
commonly called E.N.T.s. They are specialized in treating conditions of the ear,
nose and throat. ENTs can have training on surgeries and clinic-based
treatments. They can deal with allergies, sinus problems, cancers in the neck
and head, etc.
* Pediatricians are physicians specialized in treating
ailments of younger patients from infancy until age of 18. Primary health care
of children like immunizations, baby check-ups, school physical checkups, common
colds and coughs treatment and others are administered to be Pediatricians.
There are also pediatric sub specialties for other fields of specializations.
* Psychiatrists are physicians who help treat mental illnesses and
problems. They are concerned with the mental health and mental well-being of
patients. They can work in an office or clinic or in hospitals or both but
majority of psychiatrists prefer the office-setting practice. Psychiatrists can
specialize or focus on a certain field such as Child or Adolescent psychiatry or
addiction treatments.
